mean girls
mise-en-scene
In mean girls the director had used there appearance to portray there personalitys. Karen is known to be pretty stupid so she wears very light pink. The light pink shows a sense of innocents which is portrayed throughout the scene. The colour baby pink shows that she is being influenced and she doesn’t really know what is going on as she is as dumb like baby. We know that Karen is an immature as she is constantly judging others and her self because of her insecurity’s. We know she is insecure because she looks in the mirror and starts criticising her looks.
All of the characters are wearing pink to represent their femininity. The characters wear matching outfits to show that they are all in one clikue, which makes them more empowering but while keeping it feminine as they are wearing pink, this shows they are all strong confident women who all support each other. Also in this scene there are no male figures which supports this point, this is because the dad is at work making money to support there lavish lifestyle.
Regina and her family are extremely wealthy. This is made clear to us by the things in there house and the way they act. Regina is also a very spoilt child as she has a convertible as a car and an enormous bedroom with a sea view, this shows that she is quite a materialistic person who is obsessed with being the best.
Reginas mum June is also a very self obsessed person whois obsessed with her looks. We know this because of she has had a boob job. This shows that she has insecurities and money to spend on her looks. June also wears pink to try and fit in with her daughter and trying to old on to her youth years, when really she is quite an embarrassing mother. June also uses the family dog as if it is a prop, it is always in her arms and she has dressed it up like a doll. This links back to the point of her being being insecure as she has to carry around her lap dog to improve her appearance.
The dog that they own is a Chihuahua this shows that they are very wealth and very materialistic as this dog bread is known to be the sort of handbag dog, many wealthy wives have them to show that they are better than everyone else as they are a small dog that resembles money.
Inside of reginas room there are posters of boys and pictures. This shows that she is not a mature teenager as she is still fantasizing over famous people and her boy friends. This gives the audience a sense that she is not a very nice person to be around as she is constantly looking for more than she already has. She does this by displaying famous people to show that they will never be good for her being and just generally being a cliche.
In the downstairs of the house there are lots of flowers that shows that June is in charge of the house not reginas Dad. This could be because June is a very full on lady and she is allowed to decorate the house in a feminine way. June may also be a spoilt wife as her husband maybe buys her the flowers as she has nothing else to do with her day. This is because she is a stay at home mum.
The way that hair and makeup is presented throughout the scene shows that they are self obsessed and rather vain about how they look. We are made aware of this as there are multiple references to hair in the extract. At one point 3 of the girls are stood in the mirror fixing there hair as they want to look perfect. This is because the director wants to show how self obsessed they are. Another time hair is featured is when June is told by Ragina to go and fix her hair as a distraction to get rid of her mum. June plays along as this is probably quite a common thing for her daughter to say to her as they are all so vain.
We know Cady is the new girl because of what she is wearing. The big pink oversized polo shirt shows that she doesn’t really fit in with any of the other girls as she doesn’t own any fitting pink clothes as she is more mature than the rest of them. In Ragina’s bedroom she is the only character that doesn’t approach the mirror to fix her hair or adjust her clothes because she is much more grown up and is new to this vain lifestyle. She also seems to be quite shy and doesn’t talk much. This tells the audience that she is new.
