representation of genre in primeval

 representation of gender in primevil

In the discovery of the hand scene the man is represented as being in control as he orders the woman to stop digging. This can be seen through the use of the mans body language and you can clearly see that he is the one who is in charge. This has the impact of making the audience feel that the man is an alpha male and the woman is being ordered around. This may be because the woman works for the man however it shows that they use a slight stereotype of men being all strong.

However when the tiger appears It turns the main blonde man into a counter type as he then is shown as a small person. This is done by using a high angle on hime. This makes the man seem less powerful as it makes him look small and venerable. The directors would have done this to make it almost be like karma and the tiger came and put him in his place.

In the scene with the zip wire It shows now that the woman is a strong counter type of a female as she is showing bravery and strength. The director has done this to show that women can be hero’s. This signifies that not all women are week and that a stereotype is just a stereotype and not everyone fits into one.

In the scene where the lady is being threatened with the gun the director has used slow motion to build tension of the damsel in destress. This has the impact of making her seem week and vulnerable and builds on the stereotype that women are not strong. However when the men come in to rescue her, it gives them the hero title as they are risking there life to save her.

Furthermore in the same scene we get the sense of fear from the warning gunshot this shows that this man is asserting his male dominance by threatening this vulnerable woman who is feeling sheer fright for her life as the man begins to close ground between them. This makes the audience feel tense because she is in danger for her life. This make the damsel in destress character become much more clear.

The use of the tilt down camera shot when the main blonde man is discovering the hand shows that he is in a potentially dangerous situation. This is repetition as he was just in the same hole when the tiger came and attacked him. This shows a gender stereotype that men are strong and brave as this man was in a dangerous situation in that exact same spot previously however he still comes back to investigate what he has found.

The woman with short hair is not the most lady like character. We are made aware of this because of the clothes she wears. She is wearing a black leather jacket throughout. The colour black is known to be a male colour and the idea of a leather jacket comes from riding motorcycles , this is a dangerous sport that is mainly a male dominated sport and this shows that she is a strong powerful woman who is not scared by anything just like a man. Further more the way that her hair is cut shows that she doesn’t care about what people think about her as she is strong and powerful. The haircut makes the audience thing that she is quite a masculine character as short back and sides in the classic males haircut.

The blonde man is not your stereotypical man however he does take some of the main male stereotype properties as he wears the clothes of a stereotypical male however he is also an adventurer. This shows that he is not your stereotypical man as he would rathe go out and explore than go out with his mates to the pub. This shows even though he meets most of the properties of a stereotype but also a counter-type as he doesn’t fit all of the characteristics of a man. To further this point he is wearing a white T-shirt which is not really a gender specific colour. This is because he is not a massively masculine male so he doesn’t wear black or blue.

In conclusion the representation of gender in primevil is very abnormal in the sense that gender is represented in multiple ways.this shows that there is a contrast in characters due to the contrast in personalities throughout the extract.
